Safe Tanning Guide

If there's something I'm a bit of a weirdo with its SPF. When I was a teenager I used to sunbathe endlessly without any protection at all because I stupidly believed that wearing proper SPF protection would prevent me from getting a tan. When I was 19 I heard the news that someone a little older than me who lived on my street had been diagnosed with skin cancer. Since she was only 25 at the time I panicked and realized what I had been doing wrong all of these years thinking that I would never be affected by such a horrible disease as my skin was too young. Unfortunately, anyone can be affected, and its not just skin cancer we need to worry about. UV rays can be seriously damaging to young skin, promoting premature ageing and hyper pigmentation, none of which are reversible. Today I want to talk you through my little stash of sunscreens, and how I (safely) use them.

Face: Your face is probably the most important place to protect as unlike your body you can't cover it up when you start getting wrinkles and sun damage. I adore the L'oreal Active Anti-wrinkle and Brown Spot Matte Fluid Protection, because unlike most sun creams this has a matte texture and leaves virtually no residue on the skin. It protects against both UVA and UVB rays, and is perfect for wear underneath make up. If I am planning on going abroad I usually take something with a little more protection, and I recently bought this Avon Moisturizing Sun Cream for Face to take away with me next week. I haven't used it yet so I can't say what its like, but with a high SPF of 30 its perfect for the face. I also got Boots Vitamin E Gentle Eye Cream as I quite often forget to keep my sunglasses on and I thought this would be handy to really protect my delicate under eye skin from the sun.

Body: I used to assume that I didn't need to wear sun cream because in general my skin tans pretty easily. I never really burn, and I have tan lines pretty much all year round. I didn't know until recently that actually a tan can be just as damaging as sunburn if you don't take the proper precautions. For next week I'm going to be taking three sunscreens with me. Firstly, I'll be taking the Nivea Invisible Protection Spray in SPF 30, which I wanted for all those areas that are never usually exposed and therefore a little more vulnerable to the sun. It's good that this one is water resistant and non greasy as I hate feeling sticky and spend a lot of time in the pool on holiday. I'm also going to be using Garnier Ambre Solaire Golden Protect in SPF 20, which is a good moderate level of protection for someone who tans easily like me. I've also went for the Hawaiian Tropic Dry Oil Spray in SPF 15 for the last few days to boost my tan. Since this still has an okay level of SPF I don't feel bad about using this to tan. It also smells amazing!

Hair and Scalp: I really seem to suffer from a dry itchy scalp when I go on holiday, not to mention my hair seems to completely frazzle and become so dry. I saw this Soltan Head and Hair Protector in Boots and decided to give it a go. It's supposed to protect your head and hair from the sun and stop your scalp from burning, so I actually think this is a great idea, and can't wait to try it!

How do you guys feel about SPF? Do you use it wisely or neglect it?

  2. I never used to care much about sun protections either but just for the past two years I've realised how damaging the sun can be to our skin (always wear protection kids). I really need to get a good facial sun screen or a good sun hat!
