Prep, Prime and Set; Longer Lasting Make up.

If there's anything in the beauty world that I am a certified expert in; it's getting my make up to last the day. When you have oily skin that can be quite tricky, but over the years I have enlisted a few certain products to help me, so I thought I'd do a little round up of my favourites.

It goes without saying that in order to get flawless make up, you need to start with a flawless base. I alway make sure I double cleanse and moisturize my skin properly before I apply my make up. The cleaner your skin the easier it is going to be for you to apply make up. I also use a primer daily. I think a lot of people don't quite realise how important it can be to use a primer if your skin is anything less than perfect. I mainly use mine to smooth over imperfections, and help my make up to last the day (or night). My current favourite is the Rimmel Stay Matte Primer, which does such an amazing job of keeping my face shine free. As well as my usual face primer I also have one for under my eyeshadow, something I deem completely necessary if you are planning on staying perfect while dancing in a sweaty nightclub. My all time favourite, and the eyeshadow primer which really cannot be beaten is the Urban Decay Primer Potion. This moisturizes your eyelids to stop eyeshadow from creasing, and I swear by it on the rare occassion that I actually wear eyeshadow.

If I'm wearing lipstick I will normally apply a little lip balm about five minutes before I start doing my make up. This way when I apply my product it is not sticking to any dry patches that my lips normally have. I've also started wearing lip liner. For ages and ages I never really saw what the point in lip liner was, but recently I tried it after a friend told me she swore by it and now I'm hooked. I really can't believe I'd been wearing lipstick for all these years to a bazillion nights out without lip liner! It is so good at making your lipstick last longer and an absolute dream for thin lipped gals like myself as it really enhances your cupids bow. The one I've been wearing the most is the Glimmerstick Liner by Avon in True Red, which is super cheap, yet works a treat!

The last thing you need to do if you want long lasting make up is to set it properly using either a spray or powder. The amount of tutorials I have watched on YouTube to see that most people don't set their make up? Crazy! I usually use either/or, but for nights out I tend to do both for a bit of extra security. I will ALWAYS use a powder no matter what look I am going for; truth is, my make up just seems to melt off my face without it. At the moment I'm using One Heck of A Blot by Soap & Glory, and absolutely loving it! Its probably one of the best I've ever used! My favourite setting spray is Urban Decay's De-slick, which is an absolute dream for oily skin! I don't know how it does what it does, but it definitely works! I'd actually never been a fan of make up setting sprays, shunning them scornfully until this little baby fell into my life (or my online shopping basket). Now I can't imagine going to a nightclub without it!

So, what are you guys tips and tricks for making make up last longer? Do you think priming and setting are always necessary steps to your make up routine?

  1. I am so tempted to buy One Heck of a Blot! It's a bit naughty but when I'm going out if I am hairspraying my hair I sometimes spritz over my face to help my makeup last longer! I'm sure it's terrible for your skin but it does work!

  2. Agree with priming and setting!! I can't bring myself to do my makeup without priming my face first! I like using thicker foundations as I find that they last the longest! Liquid-y serum-like ones slip off my face 10 minutes out the door! After reading this post, I feel like I have to get the S&G powder x

  3. I got some free samples of the Urban Decay eyeshadow primer a while back and swear by it! I use it with the Urban Decay Naked 3 palette (which I personally think lasts really well anyway), but will definitely be purchasing some more when my samples are finished! I don't use any primer underneath my foundation however. I don't find they really do much for me; or maybe I just haven't found the perfect one yet!! Alexandra, x
